What’s it like to tame your golden hamster?
Centine has been with us for about a month now. She has gotten acclimated to her new cage and environment, and we think it is time to start taming her. So we got some fresh dandelion leaves from our front yard and started calling her, dangling the leaves one by one through the grid of her cage. It was about 8 p.m., so right about the time our nocturnal friend became really active. Look how she’s venturing out of the hole in her little wooden house:

For a first friendly touch, Lyons Cub made “boop” on Centine’s nose–a few days later, she came by herself and stood up to reach my fingers to get another “boop” 😉 Now, she comes when you call her, anticipating a treat or playtime.

Now, it’s half a year later, and Centine has been out in the free-range cage with my son and his school friend many times, being totally unafraid and friendly. We use this spare cage (where kids can sit in; it is basically a fabric tent that can even be zipped closed on the top.

What we never managed to do with our wild Centex before he passed, we managed with Centine!
