How to Replace a Dead Hamster with a Substitute for a Grieving Kid

Oh no!!! My son’s hamster Centex passed away 🙁

He was barely a year old, and we took such great care of him. Maybe he fell off a ledge? We took all the wooden ledges out of the big cage we had gotten for him. Or, he hoarded some food and ate it when it was moldy? Maybe he had cancer? We will never know.

While Centex will always hold a place in our hearts, I decided to replace him with a new hamster. After all, we have this big cage with furnishings and all this food still, and my son really wants to tame his hamster, which he never got to do with Centex. Thus, we went to Dehner Garten Center and purchased a little hamster girl that looks almost the same (just with short hair). Her name is Centine:

I’m sure my son will love her just as much as Centex. She is much friendlier and even allowed him to pat her right out of the store. She also didn’t tremble when being watched but ran curiously through her cage and ate in front of us. She looks like a very laid back and trustful little hamster!

We hope she will live a long and happy life with us and will at some time be tame, so my son can hold her. We talked about Centex being in animal heaven now, where he meets Honey and Sally, our two Labrador Retrievers, and Frankie, our cat. And that he is very happy and healthy there and feels no pain. We buried his lifeless little body in a pretty, black cardboard box in the back yard and bought a red flower for him. He got many tears and some farewell pats on his tiny head.

Centine will get our love and care now. I will have to print out Centex’s photo, because my son wants to hang it above her cage to remind us of him when we watch her. She might even be a younger relative of his, because she is from the same store and looks very similar.

Update a couple of weeks later: Watch Centine eat!
