There are so many cute porcupine children’s books out there, and guess what they’re teaching about? You’re right: befriending a special person (or animal). Someone who is unapproachable, untouchable, prickly, so to say. Take, for example, the book Elmore by Holly Hobbie. This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of how Elmore uses his quills to make friends. It’s perfect for older toddlers and preschool kids to teach them acceptance of the different (or, if they are different, to be truly themselves). Then, there is Porcupine’s Pie by Laura Renault. It’s about selfless sharing and the spirit of Thanksgiving. Don’t forget A Porcupine Named Fluffy by Helen Lester, a funny laugh-out-loud book about self-acceptance that will easily become a child’s favorite. Finally, I need to mention the early reader Duck, Duck, Porcupine! by Salina Yoon, which is great for kindergarteners with its interspecies friendships and warm tales of finding love.
Lyons Cub loves porcupines, probably because we visit them so often at the animal park. They’re really cute, how they wobble with their quilled bottom. And they’re munching carrots like bunnies! Here, you can see my son observing the porcupines at feeding time in Reuschenberg Animal Park:
