Which child doesn’t like horses? If you have the extra money and want something aesthetic in your nursery or children’s room, what about a Montessori natural wood swing as opposed to a plastic one? If you like it eco-friendly and non-chemical, this is the way to go. This beautiful horse swing is designed to hold kids from 6 months to 3 years of age and can bear up to 44 lbs (20 kg). When Lyons Cub was one year old and 20 lbs, I took down the plastic and fabric door frame bouncer and put this horse in its stead, and it stayed inside for almost a year and was frequently used.

Actually, since the door frame is much lower than a tree to hang from, the “reigns” of the horse were so long that I could lie comfortably in bed and pull them, to keep my son swinging while I was reading my students’ papers or browsing mom blogs on my cell phone 😉 If your bed or rocking chair isn’t further away than 2 meters, you can do it, too 🙂

After a year, it went outside for some wilder horse play. Under our deck, it was pretty much protected from heavy rain, so I never stained it. The sun will bleach it with time, but it will still be smooth and nice to look at. This natural swing is very safe; only if you go really wild and high, and if the child leans too far forward, could there be the danger of falling over the front. It never happened to us, but when we were outside, I was always standing right next to it. With good care, this exquisite present can survive many years and several children. Try it out!

Never look a gift horse in the mouth…. You can also get a similar horse made in China for about 40 bucks, if you don’t want to invest about 70 bucks for this noble horse from Ecotribe. This depends entirely on your frame of mind. It comes with secure carabiners and special straps, and the assembly is very easy. Depending on where you tie the knots, you can hang horsey up high in a tree or from a deck, or from a low ceiling or door frame. It doesn’t even have to be a horse; Ecotribe used to have a unicorn available, too, and I’ve seen a giraffe somewhere, as well. In Europe, there’s a dino swing – now, that would have been exciting for Lyons Cub!!!
